Here is some interesting information about Reykjavik:
Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland. It is the country’s center for trade and transportation, government administration and educational, social and health services. The main industry is fisheries but tourism is growing rapidly. There are some manufacturing industries in addition to the usual trades and services.
Hallgrímskirkja, the highest church in Iceland, 74,5 meters high. The architect is Gudjon Samuelsson but he is also the architect of the catholic cathedral in Reykjavik, Kristskirkja. The catholic cathedral was inaugurated in 1929. The building of Hallgrimskirkja started in 1945 and ended in 1986.
The book of settlements which was inspired in the 12.th century by the work of Iceland’s first historian, Ari the learned, tells the story of Ingolfur Arnarson’s arrival here in Reykjavik in the year 874. It tells of the steam that smoked from the natural hotsprings nearby, which prompted Ingolfur to give the place the name it has had to this day – The Smoky Bay=Reykjavik.
Reykjavik got its municipal rights in 1786, the number of inhabitants being then about 300. Today Reykjavik has about 120.000 inhabitants. The city is built on seven hills, its oldest part being the city center, down at the harbour, but the newest areas stretch towards east, Breidholt and the suburb of Grafarvogur. Breidholt is the largest suburb of the city with approx. 25.000 citizens, the majority being young people and children.
Laugardalur: the valley of hot springs. Main center of sports and outdoor recreation. Soccer fields, running tracks, 50m long outdoor swimming pool, skating rink, botanical gardens, domestic pet farm, city camp site and Reykjavik’s youth hostel. An great area to take a nice walk in.
Mount Esja is the mountain of Reykjavik. It shelters us from the strong and cold northern winds. It is over 900m high and 2900 feet above sea level. Volcanic activity started in Esja about 3 million years ago and lasted for about 1 million years where at least 10 ice ages appeared with warm periods in between. In many eruptions both sub-glacial and sub-arial, basalt and palagonite layers have been formed. All layers are leaning towards east, due to the heavy volcanic material built up on the thin crust in the tectonic area.
